I do understand how someone can love a book that is contrary to one's ideals (I love
Crime and Punishment and
the Brothers Karamazov). Although, I will say that at the time I first read
Crime and Punishment I was strictly Catholic and, therefore, liked it for that reason. It (and Dostoevsky's style) must somehow be ingrained in my mind as something pleasing, even though I don't believe in Christian existentialism for a second. On the other hand, I really dislike Nietzsche's philosophy, and
Crime and Punishment is a type of argument against that philosophy (and I know
Crime and Punishment was written before Nietzsche published his work, but Schopenhauer's philosophy was around at this time).
